Hi Huneybees,

Here's an invitation for you to experience a fun hands-on cooking session cooking our local heritage meals - Laksa, Chicken Satay and Kueh Dadar with Food Playground on August 24th 2013. Read on for more details and my experience at the workshop...

Well, ever since I've gotten married, I've been cooking more and more. Something different everyday is what I am looking for, in search of new recipes, picking up new skills as I go. So, I jumped at the chance to learn how to cook heritage meals like - Laksa, Satay and Kueh Dadar.

Last week, I was at Food Playground (4A Craig Road) for a morning fun of cooking with a group of bloggers. We were treated to cookies from France and Lemongrass Lemonade from UK. It was like as though they knew I just came back from there. Hehehehe....

So, while waiting for everyone to arrive, I also did a little doodle on my chef hat and this is it...

As you know, our nation’s 48th birthday day is approaching and we start to think of things that make Singapore truly unique. How a small red dot on the map that was once an undeveloped country has become one of the top business hubs in the world within several decades remains a talking point for many.

What makes us special can be traced to our multi-racial culture and food heritage; Chinese, Malays, Indians, Peranakans and the Eurasians. The heritage food plays a significant role, binding people of different cultures together.

Being able to enjoy a wide range of food from different racial groups in one city, it is no wonder Singaporeans love their food. There is just something about our local heritage foods that tugs at heartstrings no matter how far we may be from home.

However, alot of us, know how to appreciate the food, but never have to time and skill to know how to prepare them. That is why Ayam Brand has paired up with Food Playground for this amazing cooking session.

Are you ready? Let's head into the kitchen then!

The kitchen was pretty spacious, just nice for around 20 people to move in and out and what's more is that it is air-conditioned! We started out with a short presentation by the instructor before we were given our ingredients to do our hands-on classes...

There was quite a bit of spices involved...

We split into our groups and I was happy to be able to be with a group of friends. We already knew each other, so it was easier to work with them. However, I ended up in tears from cutting the onions and Clarence teared up from pounding them. We were making the satay sauce. Sob Sob...

Oven baked chicken.
Topped with Satay Sauce! Perfect match!
At Food Playground, they chose to stick to the Mortar and Pestle instead of a grinder to retain the heritage feel. Here's what they say about that...

"We chose the Mortar and Pestle to represent the very essence of Food Playground - The engaging and fun hands-on nature of the cooking process. We would like all who come to Food Playground to view cooking not just a chore to "get over and be through with", instead, we believe that the cooking process itself can be a highly stimulating, interactive and an enjoyable process.
The Mortar and Pestle represents an age-old way to really connect to our food, we simply cannot find a more appropriate symbol to represent our values - The passion to preserve the food culture and heritage in Singapore."
So, whilst Clarence and I prepared for the Chicken Satay, Xue Ling and Rachel prepared the Laksa.

That's our Laksa!
The last dish was Kueh Dadar, which is like a coconut based dessert and we all had out fun making it, doing the crepe and definitely the rolling fun of wrapping it. We would have done more, but it's just that, we can't resist making them and eating them on the spot! Wahahahaha!

After the cooking session, we all sat down at the "living room" area to eat what we have cooked. It was such a touching moment, I have teared up so much while cutting the onions and it was rewarding to taste the food that I've cooked. Super fulfilling day!
