The First Slam Dunk Is Making Its Premiere In Singapore 7 January 2023

2023 is getting an amazing headstart for me! I just caught a media screening of THE FIRST SLAM DUNK and I'm so happy to see my first anime "husband" back on screen!

I had Hanamichi Sakuragi (桜木花道)'s photos all over my textbooks and fell completely head over heels for his amazing basketball skills. He was such a big influence that during that Slam Dunk period, guys were spotting red hair at the basketball courts.

Coming 7 January 2023, these mighty basketballers will be back on the silver screen at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, with their movie THE FIRST SLAM DUNK.  After 26 years, Slam Dunk makes a return to kick up the hype in basketball once again for initial fans as well as newbies.

Written and directed by Takehiko Inonue, the movie premiered in Japan last year, and even surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water in Japan on the latter’s opening weekend! The storyline is easy to understand whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer to the Slam Dunk universe, and I'm in awe with just a simple 2 hours movie, so much storyline can be weaved in and capture the hearts of fans with action and humor.

The story adopts the iconic match between Shohoku High School and Sannoh Industry at the end of the manga series. Instead of my Hanamichi Sakuragi being the lead, this time, it's his point guard teammate, Miyagi Ryota. The film opens with a nostalgic flashback of the basketballer in his younger days, engaging in a one-on-one basketball match with his older brother. What transpires next is a series of events that explores Miyagi’s complicated relationship with his family and a thrilling basketball match that got us fans watching at the edge of our seats.

I love how the movie infused 3D elements to aid and exaggerate the basketball movements. It's nicely done and used, blending with the 2D drawings. The fact that the movie is made for big screens, 3D is inevitably needed. I just love how they kept the initial manga feel in the movie...

Coming 7th January 2023, the fan screening of THE FIRST SLAM DUNK will be graced by special guest Shugo Nakamura, the voice of Miyagi Ryota. He will be picking lucky fans to receive limited-edition Japan-import Slam Dunk merchandise and additionally, all fans with the Fan's Screening Premiere ticket will be entitled to a package of novelty items.
