Tomorrow we will witness Venus' small silhouette travelling across the disc of the Sun. This rare phenomenon occurs when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth.
Transits of Venus are among the rarest of predictable astronomical phenomena. Two pairs of transits occur in 243 years. It begins with a period of 121.5 years without a transit, followed by two transits occurring eight years apart. After the second transit there is a 105.5 year gap without a transit followed by a second 8 year pair of transits, which complete the cycle.
This year's transit, on 6th June 2012, 9am, is the second transit of the current cycle. Miss this and you won’t see another till 11th December 2117!
