Last night, Samsung Singapore announced the launch of the next Galaxy line-up with Unpacked held in Seoul, Korea. In Singapore, the brand will be hosting a four-day Galaxy Flip Festival at the Outdoor Plaza @ Capitol Plaza and Funan, featuring local acts, fashion, and lifestyle brands – with a Y2K twist!

Mediacorp Artistes - Desmond Tan, Pierre Png, Chantalle Ng, He Ying Ying, Fang Rong, and Cheryl Chou made an appearance at the event and held a fan meeting with their fans. Jasmine Sokko also performed at the launch presented by Indiego, which acts as a prelude to what's happening tomorrow at the Indiego More than Music 2.0. Asian Twist Express - Healthy Asian Dining by 365 Food

I've been on the prowl for eating healthy ever since some of my readings have been raising red flags. It's not an easy feat especially when I'm not a fan of greens. Some of you might know 365 Food that's located at the Ascent Science Park. They serve up “a 365 Cuisine” that builds on the success of their recipes revolutionizing Asian cuisine with healthy and mouthwatering dishes.

After years of dedication in their state-of-the-art R&D kitchen, culinary enthusiasts Eugene Tan and Kenneth Ngiam have curated a menu of unique nutritious Asian food that's been captivating the hearts of loyal customers in Singapore. They have opened a brand new 4th outlet - Asian Twist Express in the heart of the city, Suntec City Mall, bringing more accessibility to their menu.

I got to try their signature Cluck Norris, a chicken breast dish that's served up with their signature rice and an onsen egg that jiggles and burst with yolk once cut into. The rice is not your usual jasmine rice but in fact, Japanese rice that comes with its own furikake mix, adding texture as you sink your teeth in. You can also have it with the garlic chilli sauce provided for those who like a little spicy touch.

I normally will opt for chicken thigh meat as I feel that chicken breast meat can be a little dry, but in this case, it's as juicy as chicken thigh meat. I'm impressed!

Another dish is the Netfish & Chill (A cheeky name for a salmon dish eh?). The fish slice is sashimi-grade fresh Norwegian Salmon that's cooked to the right perfection, with slightly charred skin and thick juicy flesh underneath.

The dish comes with tangy sweet sauce to pair with or you can add +$3 for spicy mentaiko sauce or wasabi root sauce.

Sticky Lips - an exquisite chicken collagen soup is the one that will make me go back for seconds. Slow-cooked over an intensive 60-hour process, this extraordinary recipe extracts the finest collagen and properties from the chicken, resulting in a lusciously thick and irresistibly sticky soup.

You can taste all the amazing goodness in the soup, sweetness from the veggies, and red dates soaked into the drumstick that peels off easily, saving you the hassle of chowing down a drumstick. It comes with their signature rice on the side, but Eugene also shared that ladies like to pair it with Mee Sua (additional charge) too ~

*All of the dishes are served up with the signature rice, but you can also switch it up with Cold Cha Soba or a Salad mix at +$3 each.

If you are there for a little more carbo or want a side to share, order up the Homemade 3 Days Mentaiko Roasted Potatoes. Not only it's an eye-captivating dish, but the unami in the mentaiko sauce is also leveled up once it gets heated up by the fire gun. I took my time savoring the dish and I'm very impressed by how the potato cubes, maintain its crispiness and do not get soggy even when it has cooled down.

For drinks selection, you can try their Homemade Cold Brew Teas for a refreshing touch. But I highly recommend getting the Almond Nut Mylk. It's made with hand-squeezed nut juice, blended with Medjool dates, with no added sugar, and lactose-free. 

I like that after having these dishes, I am full and satisfied, yet not leaving any heavy burden feel. I walk away feeling light, knowing I had a healthy option. The recipes by 365 Food are 100% made from scratch, using premium and fresh ingredients. The team’s ever-growing menu is meticulously conceptualized and developed in-house with much love and value proposition in mind. Customers can be assured that they are getting not only delicious food, but also healthy and nutritious dishes.

gamescom asia announces inaugural physical B2C Entertainment Zone with first partner Capcom onboard

gamescom asia that's happening in Singapore from 19–22 October 2023 will host a physical B2C Entertainment Zone exhibition for the first time, with an expanded Trade Zone for B2B for this 2023 edition. 

This only satellite event of the world’s largest video games festival, gamescom, will have a trade and public exhibition, trade conference, and several programs for the public. Online shows PRIMETIME and STUDIO will also return on 19 and 22 October for all fans.

Capcom is the first major publisher to confirm its participation, kickstarting the B2C Entertainment Zone. Xsolla, AWS for Games, Unlimit, and Worldline have been cemented as sponsors within the B2B Trade Zone, with more to follow. Exhibitors and Pavilions from countries and regions such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong S.A.R., Taiwan, Canada, Israel, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America are also on board. gamescom asia 2023 is expected to attract over 30,000 visitors and over 150 exhibitors as the Entertainment Zone exhibition opens its doors to the public this year.

Let the Games Begin with the New Physical B2C Entertainment Zone 

The Entertainment Zone will welcome visitors from 20 - 22 October (with 20 October open to business visitors and a limited number of pre-registered fans only), with a showcase of trending games, interactive entertainment, and featured areas like indies, esports, cosplay, boardgames, group play zones, and more. 

Visitors can lay their hands on games by their favourite publishers and indie studios, watch live stage entertainment, and come dressed up as their favourite game characters. There will also be a designated food alley to fuel up, while merchandise from the latest games and classics will be available for purchase. 

Online shows PRIMETIME and STUDIO will return, on 19 October and 22 October respectively, with sneak peeks and other extended content for global audiences. An all-new Indie Wavemakers area will open in both the Entertainment and Trade Zone of the exhibition for studios and developers looking for publishers and investors, as well as valuable gamer feedback and testing on their new releases and demos. 

Indie exhibitors can also share about their games on the Indie Wavemakers Live Stage at gamescom asia. In partnership with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), gamescom asia will also recognize the SEA Game Awards winners at the event for the first time. The awards aim to recognize and celebrate the creativity, artistry, and technical genius of the finest game developers from the Southeast Asian and International video game industry. Award winners will be announced at MYDCF 2023 (Malaysia Digital Content Festival) on 29 September in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and will receive further recognition at gamescom asia 2023. 

At the Heart of Gaming Business with a Bigger and Better Trade Zone 

gamescom asia’s Trade Zone consists of the Trade Zone Exhibition and Trade Conference on 19 and 20 October. 

The Trade Zone exhibition will be open to all Trade visitors and conference delegates and will feature Expo Stage talks, networking & recharge zones, esports zone as well as the all-new Indie Wavemakers area. Country pavilions and booths from gaming companies and service providers will showcase the latest games and services to publishers, investors and IP owners who are looking for the next big thing in games. 

Over 80 industry experts will present in person at the Trade Conference. With three extended tracks across 19 and 20 October, the conference will cover the latest gaming trends, as well as tried-and-true games design, business, and marketing principles. Content creators, KOLs, and influencers in gaming can glean insights and up their game in the new Content Creators Summit, held on 20 October.

Conference delegates will have access to all content as well as networking sessions like the official conference networking reception and will be able to apply for the Developers-Publishers-Investors Speed Networking session.

Qixi Fest 2023: A Month of Celebrations with Free Qixi Boat Tours, Activities & Finale Carnival

Qixi Festival (七节夕) is one of my favorite Chinese festivals as it comes with a very beautiful story background, a myth of two star-crossed lovers - the Cowherd (Niu Lang) and Weaver Girl (Zhi Nu) The story is derived from actual constellation movements - Altair and Vega, which both characters represent. There are a few variations to the story but it mainly goes like this... 

The Origin

Niu Lang came across seven celestial fairies bathing in a lake one day. His companion, a cow (who is actually the God of Cattle, sent down to Earth for violating Heaven's laws) suddenly talked and helped him get acquainted with the fairies as a favor return as Niu Lang once saved him. 

It encouraged him to steal their clothes while they are in the water and so, the fairies got the youngest amongst them, Zhi Nu, to go out and retrieve their clothes. They both fell in love and she agreed to his request to marry her. So, she stayed back on earth and have two children with him.

However, when the Empress of Heaven found out that her daughter had married a mortal, she is enraged. She forces Zhi Nu to return to heaven, leaving Niu Lang heartbroken. The cow then told Niu Lang to kill itself and wear its hide. This magical hide would allow him to go to the heavens to find his wife. Niu Lang reluctantly does so and goes to heaven with his two children to find Zhi Nu. 

The Empress of Heaven was enraged and used a hairpin to rip a wide river (the Milky Way) in the heavens to separate Niu Lang and Zhi Nu on opposite sides, never to be able to meet each other.

The lovers and the kids were weeping so bitterly, that some magpies took pity on them. They flew up to heaven and formed a bridge across the Milky Way, allowing the pair to reunite. This moved the Empress of Heaven and so she allowed them to meet once a year on the 7th day of the 7th month of each lunar year.

Reviving Qixi Festival

This story has since evolved as the Chinese version of Valentine's Day and me being the horrible romantic believed so, but actually, it's a day when women will pray to the stars for a good marriage and also for the skills and wisdom to make them good wives. Thus the alternate name for the day - Qi Qiao Festival (乞巧节), meaning begging for skills.

During this day, there will be activities to do, girls will show off their needlework and eat a Qixi pastry called Qiaoguo, made from flour, sesame, and sugar. In Singapore during the mid-1800s, this festival was said to be even grander than the Chinese New Year! They even had parties that go up to 10 days!

The women formed sisterhood organizations called Seven Sisters' Associations, or Milky Way Associations, to celebrate the festival together. Qixi Festival was marked by grand public displays of handicrafts in Chinatown - especially those that involved Majies (妈姐, domestic servants) from the Shuntak region - but these traditions have faded into obscurity since the 1970s as many Majies began to retire and returned to their hometown. 

This year the Qixi Festival will be celebrated on 22 August 2023 but to bring back the hype after being forgotten for more than 50 years, there will be a celebration over the weekends from 7 July to 20 August. Clan associations, and community partners led by cultural researcher Lynn Wong have banded together to revive the festival in Singapore. You can look forward to 7 weekends of talks, workshops, exhibitions, and tours leading up to a mega two-day carnival at Smith Street, Chinatown on August 19 and 20.  

Qixi Fest 2023 Celebrations

In conjunction with the festival, there will be a plethora of activities such as free boat tours and trails, storytelling sessions, crocheting classes, heritage cooking, and demonstration workshops. Most of the Qixi Fest programs are free with a few being ticketed, more details here.

Qixi Fest’s finale event on 19-20 August 2023 is a mega carnival featuring cooking demonstrations of lost heritage foods, special art-in-action showcases with practitioners such as Andy Yeo who will be painting lanterns on the spot, and cultural music performances including guzheng orchestral music and a martial arts display!

Qixi Fest River Cruise
Go back in history as you listen to stories of female migrants as well as the Kinmen people whose boats once plied the Singapore River on this free Qixi Fest River Cruise.

The boat tours are held in collaboration with clan association partner Kim Mui Hoey Kuan (金门会馆) and will take you past key sites and monuments beginning and ending at the Clarke Quay Jetty. Taking place every Sunday from now till 20 August 2023 from 8 pm to 8.30 pm in English, and 8.30 pm to 9 pm in Chinese. There are a total of 12 free boat tours along the Singapore River, accommodating up to 30 pax per timeslot.  Along the way, you can hear stories of yester years and enjoy the scenery along the Singapore River.

Talks and Family-Friendly Workshops
Themed (Her)Story there will be free talks, panel discussions & exhibitions to celebrate the female migrant pioneers who brought the festival to Singapore in the 19th century; shining light on factory women who toiled in the graveyard shift and also the (mis)representation of Samsui women in media and the arts.

You can also experience hands-on what it is like preparing for the celebration back in the day through heritage food preparation workshops such as Majie Chilli biscuits (辣椒饼), Tung Ann (炸枣), and Meizhou Yam Balls (芋头圆). You can also pick up some new skills like calligraphy, Hanfu craftsmanship, harmonica playing, outdoor sketching and even riddle-solving!

Make-A-Wish Magpie
Magpies play quite a major role in the Qixi mythology, thus the mascot for Qixi Fest 2023  - QiQi (七七or seven seven). You can pen your wishes on paper magpies and help form a “Magpie Bridge” which will be an art installation displayed at the finale carnival, as part of the 1,000 wishes programme.

For a better chance of having your wishes fulfilled, you can also crochet or customize your very own magpie crochet plushie and let your hopes and dreams take flight (even if you have zero experience in crocheting). Psst, you can also keep your wish a secret by “safeguarding” it in the magpie.

The crotcheting workshop takes place on 22 July at 2 pm and 4 pm.

Detective Conan The Movie: Black Iron Submarine (名探偵コナン●黒鉄の魚影 サブマリン) Playing in Cathay Cinemas Now!

Shinjitsu wa Itsumo Hitotsu (しんじつはいつもひとつ)！ 

There is always only one truth!  

The Black Organization has struck again! This time, we are taken to Hachijo-Jima island, Tokyo; where our main character Detective Conan helps Interpol with a murder mystery involving a new facial recognition tech.

Imagine a software that can detect all our footmarks with just a photo, crimes can be detected earlier, and no matter where the bad guys go, we can easily track them down! Additionally, with just a childhood photo, your adult image can be worked out via CGI, so missing children can be found!

Well, this is the amazing tech which the movie - Detective Conan The Movie: Black Iron Submarine  (名探偵コナン●黒鉄の魚影 サブマリン) revolves around. Engineers from around the world gathered for the full-scale operation of "Pacific Buoy," an offshore facility to connect security cameras owned by the worldwide police forces. The tech is undergoing a test run when one of the creators went missing...

Meanwhile, Conan and the Detective Boys visit Hachijo-Jima at Sonoko's invitation and receive a phone call from Subaru Okiya (a graduate student in the Graduate School of Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan University, who is an FBI agent Shuichi Akai and a black-robed organization's Rye) informing them that a Europol employee was murdered in Germany by the Black Organization's Gin and that they are targeting on the new tech too!

Conan, who is disquieted, sneaks into the facility and finds himself in the midst of the missing case. His friend Ai Haibara (who is a former member of the Black Organization but now works with Conan to destroy them) also got entangled and kidnapped too. The story unfolds as he goes on his rescue mission.

Black Iron Submarine is the first time in six films that the Black Organization is deeply involved in the plot, and the film takes us back to the heart of the work. The mix of 2D and 3D animation is pretty smooth,  just not a big fan that the characters are a little more angular compared to the previous versions. His signature red bow tie look took a break for a more casual image, it could have appeared at least once coz when the red bow appeared, it seemed like a little story jump.

All in all, the movie brings back tons of memories and it was fun to catch it with fans during the special screening, where everyone shared exclamations and clapped during climax. It's easy to be brought into the story even for those who have not seen Detective Conan before. In fact, the movie has attracted me to go visit Hachijo-Jima on my travel list!

A little background on the Detective Conan series...

Detective Conan is a detective story about Shinichi Kudo, a high school detective who turns into an elementary school student after being given a special drug by the mysterious Black Organization. Kudo then takes on the alter-ego of “Conan Edogawa,” a young detective. He skillfully manipulates Kogoro Mouri, a slightly ditzy detective and father of his childhood friend Ran Mouri, in order to solve a series of difficult cases while hiding his true identity.

In addition to the various cases that arise, the series depicts a fierce battle against its nemesis, the Black Organization, and the gradual unraveling of the organization’s mysterious ways has continued to fascinate many fans.
