Hi Huneybees,
It was definitely a treat last night to have seen world's top skaters donned in lusciously adorned costumes, beautifully re-telling the story of Sleeping Beauty. I've always seen ice skating competitions on TV, but to see them upclose, it was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime!
Who would have thought a theatre stage could be transformed into a skating rink and combined with Tchaikovsky's pieces, a classical fairytale can be retold in such freezing grace. The chiffon dresses fluttering as the skaters glide along the ice stage and if you listen closely, you can hear the 'swish swosh' of the ice blades cutting into the ice, in between the soothing orchestra's music.
The story is not the usual version that you've grown up hearing. This 21st century new version does not have the fire breathing Maleficent for villain but rather a mad magician alchemist - Carabosse with his minions. He was mad for not being invited to the infant Princess Aurora's christening, thus under anger, he put the princess to sleep.
And before you mess it up, the ladies in pastel rainbow dresses are no fairy godmothers, but rather Aurora's sisters with Princess Lilac as the strongest. The scene where she swaps her skates for pointe shoes with 4 swains keeping her off the ice in a continual series of beautiful lifts, left a strong impression as I left the theatre.
Also, the beautiful rose bed bearing the Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora within took my breath away. It was indeed a magical moment spent to see a fairytale retold and not forgetting, a cooling time too!
The Imperial Ice Stars Sleeping Beauty On Ice will only be around for this weekend till 27 September 2015. Be sure to catch it before they fly off for their next performance ~~~

The Imperial Ice Stars’ Sleeping Beauty on Ice is not your usual theatre performance with song and dance, focusing on highlighting those not attempted before skating moves and the magnificent orchestra music, where my favourite Winds and String section get to take center stage.
Well, dear dads and mums, this is no Disney version where you get cute characters dancing around and I wouldn't suggest bringing kids too young to go in. I had a hard time fully indulging in the play as half the time, the baby next to me was crying and the mum had to keep singing and bouncing the kid off her lap to keep him entertained. Distracting much? YES! Parents can't enjoy and you might just be wasting those tickets....
Okok, back to Sleeping Beauty On Ice.

Wonder if a Frozen version is in plan?
