More big names at this year's STGCC!

With STGCC nearing, everyone's getting more excited on who are the artists featured and attending the annual event...

Come September, the Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention (STGCC) 2012 will spring into action with a highly-anticipated line-up of pop culture personalities from the East and West, STGCC-exclusive collectibles and a bevy of programmes. From STGCC’s Walk of Fame to panel sessions featuring this year’s pop culture personalities, from a cosplay runway featuring top cosplayers from the region to DJ battle, there is something for every pop culture fan. 


Touya Hibiki, Japanese cosplayer
Touya Hibiki is a famous cosplayer in Japan, well-known for her extremely charming portrayal of male anime and manga characters. Her flawless cosplay of familiar male characters such as Ichinose Tokiya (Uta no Prince Sama), Vocaloid character Kaito, Shiraishi Kuranosuke (Prince of Tennis), Kamui and Okita (Gintama) as well as Alto Saotome (Macross Frontier) has captured the hearts of thousands of fans worldwide. Touya also regularly participates as a staff Cosplayer for Miku Party (Mikupa), Comiket and many other game events in Japan. She will be making her first appearance in Singapore at STGCC.


Kousaka Yun, Japanese cosplayer
Another famous Japanese cosplayer coming to Singapore for the first time is Kousaka Yun. She is best known for her depiction of sweet, innocent characters from popular anime and manga such as Kobato Hasegawa (Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai), Kagura (Gintama), Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica) and Yamada (Working!). Yun and Touya have also worked together to bring alive dreamy couples from popular anime series such as Gintama and Uta no Prince-sama.


MONOMIND
MONOMIND is a popular Japanese electronic music label. Made up of DJ haLRu and guest artists, MONOMIND takes pride in spreading its fusion of Otaku and Club culture to all parts of the world. Known as the mastermind behind Japan’s much-raved about Touhou club event “Onban Yakoh” (Monster Party),DJ haLRu is famed for being the Mastering Engineer for popular Doujin releases such as Anime House Project Series and Enigmatic Lia 4.
DJ battle @ STGCC: DJ haLRu, MONOMIND vs DJ Zanio, ZANEEDS
Japanese pop culture fans can also look forward to an electrifying DJ battle as DJ Zanio from ZANEEDS battles MONOMIND’s DJ haLRu at this year’s STGCC. This will turn out to be an ultimate Touhou vs Vocaloid showdown that fans will not want to miss.

Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk, Coarse Artists
German artists, Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk, are the creative minds behind coarse, famous for their distinct style of sculpting that looks as if they had chiseled figures from rock. Cast, handcrafted and finished in the coarse workshops in Hamburg, Germany and Hong Kong, their works are available in art toy stores and galleries across 32 countries. Focusing primarily on statues ranging from small resin pieces to life-size fiberglass creations that blend both Eastern and Western aesthetics, Mark and Sven’s original sculptures are transformed into vinyl figures that convey an alternate reality. Their works have become admired and highly covetable by art and toy collectors around the world, usually available as a single piece or in small runs, In 2011, coarse took home the first prize at the Designer Toy Awards for “Outstanding Production”. The artists will be designing STGCC exclusives for their fans and details will be released in August.

 
Leinil Francis Yu, Marvel Comic illustrator
Marvel Comics illustrator Leinil Francis Yu will also be joining the pop culture personality line-up at this year’s STGCC. Best-known for his work on the Wolverine comic series, Leinil’s graphic style can also be seen in other popular titles including Uncanny X-Men, New Avengers and Superman: Birthright, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk and Marvel’s 2008 Epic: Secret Invasion. Leinil is currently collaborating with Wanted and KickAss writer/co-creator Mark Millar on Ultimate Avengers and their creator-owned projects, Superior and Supercrooks.


  
Andie Tong, Comic Book Illustrator
Andie Tong has a rich portfolio with the big players, including Disney, Marvel Comics, DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics. He shares great acquaintances with superheroes who made it to the silver screen as well. Andie has worked on Spectacular Spiderman UK as a regular artist, and completed the Tron: Betrayal graphic novel for Marvel Comics, which serves as a prequel to the Walt Disney Pictures, Tron: Legacy. He recently completed a HarperCollin’s children’s storybook for the Dark Knight Rises, published in conjunction with the release of the blockbuster this month. Besides comics, Andie has also done commercial work for DC Comics, Nike, Mattel, Hasbro’s Duelmasters game and illustrations for Whitewolf’s “Exalted” fantasy gaming books.


Gerry Alanguilan, Comic Book Inker
Gerry Alanguilan is known as an inker for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. His works include Superman: Birthright from DC Comics, Avenging Spider-man, X-Men and Ultimate Avengers from Marvel Comics. He is also involved in Supercrooks, the latest series on Super Villains from Marvel Comics. Alanguilan also has his own works. His comic book ELMER was nominated for an Eisner Award (considered the Oscar Awards of the comics industry) for best new graphic album in 2011, and won the Prix Asie ACBD and the Quai Des Bulles Prize in France last year (the inspiration of the book stemmed from a chicken which he owned as a child!)


 
Gabby S. Tiongson, Cartoonist
Weaving his background in medicine with a strong imagination and a bold drawing style, Tiongson creates extraordinary pieces that demonstrate the surgical precision of a scalpel. Like a hyper-energetic Frankenstein, he concocts “design ideas” that graft together body parts – human, animal and imaginary. Commissioned by big brands like Redbull & Wabi Sabi, the self-taught artist also owns his clothing line, Galactic Exiles. His first Vinyl Figure produced by Vinyl On Vinyl x VTSS called Squidwurd is scheduled for release at STGCC.



Wendy Chew, Local Chibi (Short & Cute) Art IllustratorLocal Chibi Art illustrator known for her cutesy art style, Wendy Chew has attended many events such as Seattle’s Emerald City Comic Convention and Malaysia Games and Comics Convention to showcase her work. Her dainty and adorable depictions are featured in a number of books such as Udon Entertainment Corporation’s “Street Fighter Tribute”. She has also worked on a few sets of Marvel Comics sketch cards for Upper Deck Company. A local favourite at STGCC, Wendy’s upcoming projects will be her next sketch book and a collaboration with Vinyl On Vinyl to produce her first ever figurine.



Jason Paz, Comic Illustrator
One of the new names at STGCC, Jason Paz’s remarkable works have graced the pages of Incredible Hulk, Marvel Zombies Supreme, Thor: Deviants Saga and Agents of Atlas. Apart from comics, his versatile pen strokes can be seen on popular sketch card sets for the A-list trading card companies Upperdeck, Rittenhouse Archives and Cryptozoic Entertainment’s The Walking Dead.


Martin Hsu, Character Designer
Martin Hsu is figuratively and literally the new kid on the block at STGCC. A character designer at Disney TV Animation and Nickelodeon, the all-time popular children’s entertainment TV channels, Martin is also developing his own brands such as Dragon Boy and CRAKENS. Martin’s works have also been featured in major exhibitions for Sanrio, Hasbro, and Disney.

Also joining this year’s personality line-up are comic illustrators Mico Suayan (works include Marvel Comics’ Thor, X-Men Legacy and DC Comics’ Batman Arkhan Unhinged)Carlo Pagulayan (drawn the pages of Marvel Comics’ Elektra, X-Men Unlimited and Marvel’s Planet Hulk with well-respected writer, Greg Pak) and Stephen Segovia (whose rich portfolio includes DC’s Countdown to Mystery and Marvel’s Wolverine Origins, Might Avengers, Silver Surfer and Ultimates vs Ultimates Avengers). Toy personalities Koto Nishiyama and Shinichiro Kitai of DEVILROBOTS fame will be on board STGCC as well.
